Accuracy first
We aim to get it right, not just first. Before a story is published, an editor checks:
- Figures and statistics against their original source
- Quotes against the recording, transcript or written statement
- Names, job titles, company names and dates
- That headlines and summaries match what the story actually says
When something can't be confirmed, we say so in the story instead of presenting it as fact.
Sources and attribution
We name our sources wherever we can and say where data, reports and quotes come from within the story itself.
- We prefer primary sources: company filings, official statements, platform announcements and original research.
- When we report another outlet's story, we credit it by name.
- We use anonymous sources only when the information is important, can't be obtained on the record, and the source has good reason to need protection. An editor must know who the source is.
- We link to original social media posts using each platform's official embed where possible.
Types of story
Every story is labelled so you know what you're reading:
- News: reporting on what happened, based on verified information.
- Insights: analysis of data and trends, with sources set out.
- Features: longer reporting, history and investigations.
- Opinion: arguments from our writers or contributors. These reflect the author's view.
- Predictions: forecasts are clearly labelled, with the evidence first and our conclusion second.
Images and AI
We want you to always know what an image is.
- Images created or edited with AI tools are labelled as photo illustrations. They illustrate a theme and never depict a real news event as if it were a photograph.
- On news about real events, any illustration is labelled and is never presented as a photo of the event.
- We don't publish AI-generated quotes, and we don't use AI to invent people, sources or events.
- When we use AI tools to help with research or editing, an editor reviews the work and is responsible for it.
Independence and conflicts
Our editorial team decides what we cover and how. Commercial partners, advertisers and owners don't approve stories before publication.
- Writers must tell an editor about any personal or financial interest in a story they're working on, such as clients, investments or close relationships.
- Writers with a conflict won't cover that subject, or the conflict is disclosed in the story.
- We don't accept payment in exchange for coverage.
- Gifts, free products and paid trips offered to our writers are declined or disclosed.
Advertising is labelled
Ads on The Collab Report are marked "Ad" and are kept visually separate from editorial content. Sponsored content, if we publish it, will be clearly labelled as sponsored and won't be written by our newsroom.
Press releases
We read press releases, but we don't publish them as news without checking. When a story is based mainly on a company announcement, we say so and add context, numbers and outside perspective where we can.
Corrections policy
When we make a mistake, we fix it quickly and openly.
- Significant errors are corrected in the story with a note at the end explaining what changed and when.
- Minor fixes, such as typos, may be corrected without a note.
- We don't quietly delete stories to hide mistakes. If a story is removed, we explain why.
